UCC’s Energy Assistance Department was established in April of 2020 with the goal of making sure that residents of the City of Newark and Greater Essex County area do not have their utilities shut off.
A team of outreach workers and case managers help clients receive monetary assistance for energy bills via Universal Service Fund Program (USF), the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), the Payment Assistance for
Gas and Electric Program (PAGE) and the Solar Landscape Program. UCC staff will help you decide which program is best for you! LIHEAP/USF services primarily low-income families, while PAGE concentrates on low-to-moderate income families.
The Solar Landscape program allows qualified individuals to receive 10 to 15 percent off of their electricity bills because they are located in areas with solar panels on skyscrapers through New Jersey's Energy program.
New Jersey SHARES, Inc. (NJ SHARES) is a nationally recognized 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides assistance to individuals and families living in New Jersey who are in need of temporary help in paying their energy bills.
NJ SHARES partners with over 250 human service agencies operating out of more than 300 sites statewide to provide critically needed energy assistance to families that are not eligible for other programs. Throughout the state, our partners address a broad spectrum of client needs. Providing case management services, they assist households with counseling, nutrition, housing, employment, as well as energy issues. Working together with our partner agencies we provide a holistic solution to the household's temporary or ongoing needs.
Subsequently, NJ SHARES formed partnerships with New Jersey American Water, United Water and Verizon, NJ that provide water and telephone assistance programs.
New Jersey American Water offers a comprehensive assistance program called H2O to Help Others. The program includes payment assistance and discounted rates for qualified applicants. NJ SHARES administers the program through the agency network. The program is fully funded by NJ American Water Company.
The NJ SHARES model was used to create the SUEZ Cares customer assistance program which is offered in six states. NJ SHARES administers this program which is funded by SUEZ Water.
The Communications Lifeline Program offers a discount to seniors, disabled and low income households. NJ SHARES administers this program through our client services call center and agency network. Verizon, NJ fully funds this program.
