East Orange Family Success Center is a community-based, family-centered neighborhood gathering place where any community resident can go for family support, information, and services. The Family Success Center’s goal is to enrich the lives of children and adults by making families stronger and empowering them to succeed.
At the Family Success Center you can learn new skills, share your talents, participate in activities, connect with resources, lead workshops, and meet others in your community. The center offers a variety of free educational workshops and family friendly events and activities for all ages.
Resources – Connecting families to services through information and referrals; individualized family success plans, parenting education, and parent/child bonding activities.
Family Gatherings – Monthly family bonding activities.
SHARE – Monthly food co-op offering fresh fruit, vegetables, poultry, meat, and groceries at deeply discounted rates.
Drop-in Activities – Hands-on activities for children & families, held on days when local schools are closed.
New Jersey Performing Arts Center Partnership – Free tickets for families to attend cultural performances and activities.
Active Parenting – A video-based education program teaching parents techniques to assist in raising responsible children who are able to cope with life’s challenges.
Circle of Security – Assisting parents in recognizing their child’s needs and developing a healthy parent-child bond.
Financial Literacy – Workshops that assist individuals and families to increase their knowledge and utilization of financial planning tools and skills.
KUUMBA – Early Childhood literacy-based workshop to teach parents creative and engaging play activities for children ages 3-5 years old. Activities emphasize speech/language development, motor skills, and developmental milestones.
For Children and Adolescents
Sankofa Academy – Held during afterschool hours, and the summer, the academy conducts a series of academic enrichment, tutoring, reading, and cultural awareness activities for grade school students.
Empowerment Workshops – Providing life skills training to individuals and families to foster independence and positive self-motivation.

FOCUS programs provide an array of services to Essex County Residents which include adult basic education, employment & training services, senior’s services, emergency assistance, and nutrition programs. It also provides provide quality educational services for children before, and after school, and during the summer months as well as one-on-one counseling sessions for families and children. Parenting workshops and referral services are also available to those families that need temporary or permanent assistance such as housing. The objective of all program is to provide youth & families with enriching experiences that broaden their perspectives, improve their socialization, and enhance their skills to improve their overall quality of life. Also, provide the members of our community the tools needed to empower, help grow, and become self-sufficient.

To stabilize families and individuals in crisis, especially the working poor, homeless and those in financial need and provide them with financial support and life skills training to live on their own.
NESF provides case management and direct assistance to low-income, the working poor and homeless individuals and families in greater Essex County. We provide the following programs and services:
Homeless Services
Our homeless Drop-In Center provides a safe and nurturing environment where homeless consumers can take showers, receive food, wash clothes and use the telephone as well as access our food and clothing pantry. The Center is staffed with experienced personnel who provide linkages to emergency shelters and other supportive services.
Supportive Assistance for Individuals and Families (SAIF)
Funded by the State of New Jersey, SAIF offers a safety net for those individuals who are receiving General Assistance and nearing their five-year lifetime benefits. Through intensive case management, life skills training, benefits counseling, referrals to job readiness programs and linkages to medical care and other counseling services, program participants are provided with the essentials to gain self-sufficiency. This program is referral-based by the Essex County Division of Welfare to NESF.
Prisoner Re-Entry Program
Funded through the City of Newark, NESF offers comprehensive re-entry services to the formally incarcerated. Our program includes long-term goal setting, case management, linkages to in-house services and programs, job readiness programs, housing information, referrals to medical care and other counseling services. If needed, program participants can receive short-term shelter vouchers, access to the food and clothing pantry, as well as furniture assistance referrals, obtaining proper identification and support in meeting their basic living needs.
Emergency Services
Through our centralized intake and initial assessment process, we provide supportive services to individuals and families experiencing financial hardships, such as; rapid re-housing for those experiencing homelessness, rental and mortgage assistance, security deposits, utility assistance and short-term shelter placements. Consumer interviews and eligibility determinations are by appointment only.
Central & West Ward Family Success Center
NESF is home to the Central and West Wards Family Success Center (FSC). Our FSC is a one-stop comprehensive resource center that promotes family unity and empowerment. The Center hosts monthly parent training workshops, grandparent support group, access to our community computer lab and direct emergency assistance. Program Initiatives include:
Fatherhood Program Initiative: This program assist fathers and any male age 13 and over to become a better individual and father. Through the 24/7 Dad Curriculum, our goal is to have fathers remain committed, responsible and involved in their children’s lives in a positive and interactive way by improving their knowledge, attitudes, and skills.
Grandparents Support Group: Our Grandparents support group provides supportive services to grandparents who are now rearing their grandchildren.
Food and Clothing Pantry
To alleviate nutritional shortfalls in families that are "food dependent," our agency has an on-site food and clothing pantry where consumers can receive weather appropriate clothing, food bags and food vouchers.
Additional Services
In partnership with the NJ Commission for the Blind & Visually Impaired and New Eyes for the Needy, NESF offers free eye screenings and corrective lens vouchers to eligible consumers. This service occurs on the 3rd and 4th Wednesday of every month. Consumers are seen on a first come, first serve basis. In partnership with Public Health Solutions, it allows our consumers to apply for reduced medical coverage on-site through the Affordable Healthcare Act.
As the first program of the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine, The Young Fathers Program begain in 1987. It was created to assist young men in the Greater Newark area to meet the obligations of fatherhood. The program serves young fathers or soon-to-be fathers 15-24 years old. Most are unemployed and out of school. To date it has provided services to nearly 2,000 young men. The program provides assistance with helping young men fulfill their potential by enhancing their ability to meet the financial, educational, social and emotional demands of fatherhood. The goal is to strengthen and foster family development, improve child-parent relationships, reduce child neglect and abuse and promote family planning.
Available to all NJ residents.
The Family Success Center’s overarching goal is to strengthen families and to prevent child abuse and neglect in the home.
Through proactive services, we enhance parental capacity for growth and development; increase the stability, health, and wellbeing of children and families; and empower community residents to acquire the knowledge, skills and resources they need to provide optimal outcomes for families.
The NWC Family Success Center provides family health, parent education, family activities, employment-related services, life skills, housing-related services, advocacy, referrals, special assistance, citizenship classes, and ESL classes.
Most importantly, the FSC creates opportunities for families to spend quality time with one another.
